About Shiny Satins Rabbitry
Shiny Satins is a small hobbyist rabbitry run by our family in the beautiful Pacific Northwestern USA.
We raise and show satin and mini satin rabbits. Our goal is to develop lines with the best possible combination of temperament, conformation, fur, production ability, meat quality and health. We love a challenge, and particularly enjoy working on varieties and breeds that are rare or need improvement.
We compete regularly in both ARBA shows and (for the kids) 4-H. We've loved getting to know other "rabbit people" through showing, and have been very impressed with the kindness and generosity of the people we have met. We are members of the ARBA and the American Satin Rabbit Breeder's Association (ASRBA).
At Shiny Satins Rabbitry, we strive for the utmost in quality of care for our rabbits. Their welfare is important to us, and our care and housing standards are high.
We select rigorously for well-rounded multi-purpose rabbits. Our goal is to have an ideal representative of the breed--one that can fulfill their intended purpose (such as meat production) while also performing competitively on the show table.
At Shiny Satins Rabbitry, we breed for strong healthy rabbits that are easy keepers. We expect our herd to remain healthy and do well without needing constant coddling, medicating or unusual interventions. While we will treat an illness or call in our veterinarian if necessary, we do not routinely medicate our rabbits. We do not make breeding decisions based on type alone. Animals with poor immune systems, aggressive temperaments, poor production/mothering skills, or other defects are removed from our breeding program no matter how well they do on the show table.

Satin Rabbits
Our first love are the siamese and broken siamese satin varieties--this beautiful and challenging color is our favorite.
No matter the color, the sheen and softness of the satin coat gives satin rabbits extra brilliance and beauty. The siamese variety is rather rare in this area, which makes it a bit more difficult to find competition at shows. We're hoping more people will become interested in raising this unique color of satin. Satin rabbits are a meat and fur breed. Their weight range for showing purposes is 8.5 to 11 lbs, although they can get larger. |
Mini Satin Rabbits
The mini satin is the ARBA's newest recognized breed of rabbit, and is currently considered a rare breed. They are beautiful, with the sheen and brilliance of the satin fur in a more compact package.
White was the first color approved as an official variety. In November 2009, 4 additional colors were accepted by the ARBA: siamese, red, opal and chinchilla. These can be shown as of February 2010. Many other colors are also being worked on. We have several colors of mini satins, including siamese. Show-quality mini satins should range in size from 3.25 to 4.75 lbs, with an ideal weight of 4 lbs. Surprisingly, they are also decent little meat producers, with the non-dwarf mini satins being similar in size and dressout rate to a Florida White. They also tend to have larger litter sizes than many other small breeds of rabbit. It's not unusual for a non-dwarf mini satin in our barn to raise 9 or 10 babies in a litter, and do it well. |
